Selbstgemachte Bagels

Have you ever made bagels yourself? If not, why not? It’s not as difficult as you might think! πŸ˜‰

With my recipe, you can let your creativity run wild. Whether sweet or savoury, with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or whatever you like, the possibilities for different toppings are endless!

So, let’s go!

What ingredients do I need for bagels?

These delicious little breads require just a few ingredients: All you need is:

  • Flour
  • Yeast
  • Sugar and salt
  • Water
  • And of course, various toppings.

You have a tough choice here πŸ˜‰ You can choose between poppy seeds, sesame seeds, salt, garlic, a grain mix, or if you like them sweet, just some cinnamon sugar. You see, your possibilities are endless! And if you are are looking for an easy and sweet topping, why not try some homemade strawberry jam with it? Or something a bit different but super tasty on some cream cheese would be my homemade orange and whiskey Marmelade.

Is it hard to make and shape bagels?

No, not really. One crucial moment in making bagels is shaping the dough portions. I must admit, it’s almost meditative to shape the dough into small balls and then create a hole in the middle with your finger. Just please make sure that you creat holen that are slightly bigger, as they will close again during baking.

Start by combining 180 ml of warm water with the sugar and yeast in a bowl. Give it a quick stir and let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes. This step activates the yeast and gets things bubbling. While you wait, mix the flour and salt in a separate bowl. Once the yeast mixture is ready, add the flour mixture to it along with 100 ml of water. Start kneading everything together, gradually adding the remaining water as needed. Be careful hereβ€”you might not need all of it. The dough should be firm but still slightly moist. Take your time kneading (about 10 minutes) until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Next, lightly oil a large bowl, pop your dough inside, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rest for an hour. This is where the magic happensβ€”the dough will rise beautifully! Once it’s ready, divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then use your finger to poke a hole in the center of each one to create that classic bagel shape. Let them rest for another 10 minutes while you move on to the next steps.
Preheat your oven to 200Β°C (392Β°F) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Then, bring a large pot of water to a boil and reduce the heat to a simmer. Using a slotted spoon, gently lower the bagels into the simmering waterβ€”depending on the size of your pot, you can cook 2–4 at a time. Let them simmer for 1 minute on one side, then flip them over and cook for another minute before carefully transferring them to your prepared baking sheets.
Now comes the fun part: toppings! If you’re feeling creative, sprinkle sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or even everything bagel seasoning over your bagels before they head into the oven. Bake them for about 20 minutes at 200Β°C until they’re beautifully golden brown. Once done, take them out of the oven and let them cool completely (if you can resist diving in right away!).

So, what are you waiting for? As you can see, it’s not that hard to bake this American specialty yourself! Therefore, get ready to turn your kitchen into a baking paradise.
With my recipe and a little patience, you can create your own delicious bagels and enjoy every bite.

Good luck and all the best,
